Our commitment to Reconciliation
The Temagami area has been home to the Teme-Augama Anishnabek (Deep water by the Shore People) since time immemorial.
The people of the Teme-Augama Anishnabek have lived, traveled, and cared for these lands and waters for thousands of years. Bear Island, situated on beautiful Lake Temagami, remains the heart of the Teme-Augama Anishnabai community and a central gathering place for Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents alike. The area’s deep cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance continues to shape life in Temagami today.
The Temagami Community Foundation acknowledges that our community exists on the traditional territory of the Teme-Augama Anishnabai. We recognize the profound history, knowledge, and stewardship of the Indigenous peoples who have lived here for generations, and we are committed to walking the path of reconciliation with respect, humility, and action.
The Reconciliation Fund was established through the generosity and vision of Victoria and Richard Grant who initiated a collaboration between Craig MacDonald and James Raffan, that resulted in the publication of the book Echo Maker. At the request of the Grants, the royalties from the book will be donated to the Temagami Community Foundation, ensuring that the proceeds would directly support reconciliation initiatives in the Temagami area. This gift inspired the creation of the Reconciliation Fund. These funds will support community-led reconciliation initiatives that foster dialogue, understanding, and partnership between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in the Temagami area.
The Temagami Community Foundation is committed to continuous learning and reflection as we work to address the power imbalances that exist in philanthropy. We engage our fundholders in this ongoing journey and use our role as a community foundation to amplify and advance Indigenous-led priorities in meaningful and respectful ways.
Every contribution to the reconciliation fund supports local initiatives that bring people together, honour Indigenous culture, and strengthen our shared community.
